Argentina is on the short list. It was the first country in Latin America to legalise same-sex marriage, back in 2010, and its gender identity law of 2012 is still one of the most advanced in the world. Buenos Aires hosts the largest Pride march on the continent, has queer tango milongas, and treats a couple checking into a hotel as exactly that, a couple. This article explains what that means for your trip, where to go beyond the capital, and how we plan the whole journey for you, from the first email to the flight home.

By the team at 01Argentina Travel Agency, Buenos Aires

In this guide:

Why Argentina is a genuinely LGBTQ+ friendly country

Buenos Aires: Pride, Palermo, San Telmo and queer tango

Beyond the capital: Iguazú, Mendoza, Patagonia and the Northwest

Honeymoons, anniversaries and getting married in Buenos Aires

Practical notes: safety, hotels and everyday life

How we plan your trip, and why it matters who does it

Frequently asked questions

Why Argentina is a genuinely LGBTQ+ friendly country

The law came first, and it came early. On 15 July 2010 Argentina became the tenth country in the world, and the first in Latin America, to open marriage to same-sex couples nationwide, with the same adoption and inheritance rights as any other marriage. Two years later the Gender Identity Law allowed anyone to change the gender on their documents without medical or judicial approval, a model that other countries have since copied. In 2021 Argentina added a non-binary option to its national ID and passports.

What matters for a visitor is not the legal text but what it did to everyday life. A generation of Argentines has grown up with same-sex marriage as a normal fact. Couples hold hands on Avenida Santa Fe, share a table at a parrilla in Palermo and book a double room in Bariloche without a second look. The first Pride march in Buenos Aires, in 1992, had a few hundred people, many wearing masks; today it fills the Avenida de Mayo from the Plaza de Mayo to Congress. Argentina still has its debates, like every country, but the rights are in force and the welcome is real.

Buenos Aires: Pride, Palermo, San Telmo and queer tango

Casa Rosada

Buenos Aires is the reason most LGBTQ+ travellers put Argentina on the map, and it earns it. The city has been called the gay capital of Latin America for twenty years, and the title has stuck because the scene is not confined to one street: it runs through the whole of Palermo, with its bars, restaurants and boutique hotels, into San Telmo on Sundays, when the antiques fair takes over the cobbled streets, and into Recoleta and the centre on any night of the week.

Two things are unique to the city. The first is queer tango: milongas where the roles of leader and follower are chosen, not assigned by gender, and where beginners are welcome at the class before the dancing starts. Tango was born in these streets, and dancing it in a milonga, rather than watching it from a dinner-show table, is the memory people take home. The second is the Marcha del Orgullo, the Buenos Aires Pride march. Argentina celebrates it on the first Saturday of November, not in June, because it commemorates the founding of the country’s first gay rights group in 1967. In 2026 it falls on 7 November: a daytime march with floats and music from the Plaza de Mayo to the Congress building, followed by a week of parties. If your dates are flexible, it is the week to come.

All of that sits on top of the Buenos Aires everyone comes for: the Teatro Colón, the Recoleta cemetery, La Boca, the steakhouses, the wine bars and the cafés that have not changed since 1900. Our Buenos Aires tours and packages cover the classics; the queer milonga, a drag show in Palermo or a table at a restaurant where you will feel at home are the details we add once we know who you are.

Beyond the capital: Iguazú, Mendoza, Patagonia and the Northwest

The rest of Argentina is not Buenos Aires, but the rights are national and the tourism towns are used to visitors of every kind. In practice, LGBTQ+ couples travel the whole country the way any couple does.

Iguazú Falls is a two-hour flight north and the single most spectacular place in the country: 275 waterfalls in subtropical forest, seen from walkways on the Argentine side and from the panoramic Brazilian side. See the Iguazú tours. Mendoza is wine country at the foot of the Andes, with lunches among the vines in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley; it is the destination couples choose for an anniversary. Patagonia is the Perito Moreno glacier at El Calafate, the lakes and forests of Bariloche and the end of the world at Ushuaia, where the Beagle Channel and the penguin colonies are. Salta and Jujuy, in the Northwest, are the Argentina of coloured mountains, colonial towns and the Train to the Clouds.

Iguazu Falls

The classic two-week trip is Buenos Aires, Iguazú and Patagonia, with Mendoza added for wine lovers. Everything connects by air through Buenos Aires, and in season there are direct flights between some of the destinations. We lay the route out for your dates so that no day is wasted in an airport.

Honeymoons, anniversaries and getting married in Buenos Aires

Argentina is one of the few countries where a same-sex couple from abroad can both marry and honeymoon in the same trip, and many do. Buenos Aires allows foreign couples to marry at its civil registry, and the city has become a destination for weddings precisely because the ceremony is the same one every Argentine couple has. If that is your plan, tell us when you write: we build the days around it, from the hotel for the night before to the table for the celebration dinner, and then take you on to the glacier, the falls or the vineyards for the honeymoon itself.

For anniversaries and honeymoons without the paperwork, the request we hear most often is simple: a trip where nobody has to explain anything. That is what we arrange. Our luxury division, 01argentina.travel, handles the five-star version, with private guides and the hotels on the lake, in the vineyard or facing the glacier.

Practical notes: safety, hotels and everyday life

Safety. Buenos Aires is a big city and the usual big-city rules apply to everyone: keep your phone in your pocket in the street, use the taxis and transfers we arrange rather than hailing at night. None of that is about being LGBTQ+; public displays of affection are normal in the city and in the tourist towns.

Hotels. Every hotel we work with has been booked by us for couples of every kind, and we know which ones do it well: a double bed when you ask for one, no awkward pause at reception, a concierge who knows the city. We choose the hotel with you when we quote, and we say plainly if a property is not one we would recommend for you.

Documents. Argentina recognises your marriage and your identity documents as they are. Travellers whose passport shows an X gender marker enter the country without any special procedure.

When to come. Buenos Aires is a year-round city; spring (October and November, with Pride at the start of November) and autumn (March and April) are the most pleasant. Patagonia is a summer destination, October to April; Iguazú and the Northwest work in any month.

How we plan your trip, and why it matters who does it

01Argentina Travel Agency is a licensed Argentine tour operator (EVT licence 17869), a member of ASTA, with an office in Buenos Aires and a branch in Miami, and we have been organising trips across Argentina since 2005. We are not a booking website: one person on our team takes your trip from the first email to the last day and is reachable while you are here.

Planning a complete trip means we do all of it. The domestic flights between Buenos Aires, Iguazú, Patagonia and Mendoza, which are the part that goes wrong when travellers book them piece by piece. The hotels, chosen for you and not from a list. Every transfer, so that a guide with your name on a sign is waiting at each airport. The excursions, with English-speaking guides, as shared services or private ones, and the optional tours added where you want them. The milonga, the show, the restaurant on the night that matters. Everything is quoted as one figure, and nothing is booked until you are happy with the proposal.

For LGBTQ+ travellers the difference is in the details we do not have to be told. We know which hotels, which guides and which neighbourhoods suit you, and we are from here, so we also know what has changed this year rather than what a guidebook said five years ago. Tell us your dates, how many of you are travelling and what you want the trip to be, and we come back within 24 hours with the itinerary written for you: contact 01Argentina Travel Agency.

Frequently asked questions

Is Argentina safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 2010, discrimination is prohibited, and Buenos Aires in particular is one of the most open cities in the world.
