The short version is that November to March is the safest window everywhere, October and April are the quiet, colourful shoulder months for those who don’t mind cooler days, and winter (June to August) turns most trails into snow terrain. Here is how it plays out month by month and destination by destination, so you can pick the trip that fits the dates you actually have.

By Luis, Patagonia Travel Specialist at 01Argentina Travel Agency

In this guide:

The Patagonia hiking season at a glance

El Chaltén and the Fitz Roy trails

El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier

Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego

Bariloche and the Lake District

Month by month: what to expect

Wind, weather and what to pack

How to combine destinations in one trip

Frequently asked questions

The Patagonia hiking season at a glance

Patagonia sits in the Southern Hemisphere, so its summer runs from December to February. That is when the days are longest (in Ushuaia the light lasts until well past 10 pm in December), every trail is open and every excursion is running. It is also when the wind is strongest and the trails are busiest.

The shoulder months of October, November, March and April bring fewer people, calmer air and, in autumn, the red and gold of the lenga forests. Some services run shorter timetables, and a few high routes may already carry snow, but for most travellers this is the sweet spot between good conditions and elbow room.

From June to August the far south is a winter destination: short days, snow on the trails and a different kind of trip built around snowshoes, dog sleds and the Beagle Channel rather than long day hikes. Bariloche, further north, becomes a ski town in those months.

El Chaltén and the Fitz Roy trails

El Chaltén is Argentina’s trekking capital and the place most people have in mind when they picture hiking in Patagonia. The classic routes, Laguna de los Tres beneath Fitz Roy and Laguna Torre beneath Cerro Torre, start right from the village and need no permits or guides in season.

Best months: November to March, with December to February the most reliable for reaching the lagoons. Also good: late October and April, when the crowds thin and the beech forests change colour; expect cold mornings and the chance of snow on the final climb to Laguna de los Tres. Winter: the village is quiet, the upper trails are icy and many are only sensible with a guide and equipment.

If your base is El Calafate, the full-day excursion to El Chaltén gets you to the trailheads and back in a day, with time for one of the shorter walks and the viewpoints along the way.

El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier

El Calafate is less about long treks and more about the glacier, and the glacier works all year. The walkways facing the Perito Moreno are open in every season, and each one has its own atmosphere: summer light, autumn colour, or a winter morning with fresh snow on the boardwalks and almost nobody around.

The walk on the ice itself, the Minitrekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier, used to stop for the winter months. From 2026 it is offered year-round, which removes the one big seasonal restriction El Calafate had. There are age limits for walking on the ice and places are limited in high season, so it is one of the excursions we book first when we plan a trip.

The gentler walks around town (the Nimez lagoon reserve, the Walichu caves, the balconies above Lago Argentino) are fine in any month. See the El Calafate tour packages for how the glacier day fits into two, three or four nights.

Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego

At the end of the world the season is shorter and the weather changes faster. The trails in Tierra del Fuego National Park, the walk up to Laguna Esmeralda and the climb to the Martial Glacier above town are all summer hikes: November to March, with December and January giving the longest days.

In October and April you can still walk the lower trails in the national park and along the Beagle Channel, but higher routes may be snowbound. From June to August Ushuaia is a proper winter destination and the walking becomes snowshoeing; if that appeals, the Ushuaia packages can be built around the snow rather than the trails.

Bariloche and the Lake District

Bariloche has the longest hiking season in Argentine Patagonia because it is further north and lower. The trails in Nahuel Huapi National Park, from the easy loops around the Llao Llao peninsula to the day walk up to Refugio Frey, are at their best from December to April; the mountain huts (refugios) open for the summer season and the lakes are warm enough for a swim in January and February.

March and April are many locals’ favourite months: stable weather, the forests turning, and the summer visitors gone. From late June to September Cerro Catedral is a ski resort and the high trails are under snow, though the lakeside walks stay open. The Bariloche tour packages cover both seasons.

Month by month: what to expect

Month

El Chaltén

El Calafate

Ushuaia

Bariloche

October

Season opening, cold, snow possible up high

Good, quiet

Lower trails only

Spring, some snow up high

November

Good, long days begin

Very good

Good

Good

December

Excellent, busy, windy

Excellent, busy

Excellent, longest days

Excellent

January

Excellent, busiest

Excellent, busiest

Excellent

Excellent, warm

February

Excellent

Excellent

Excellent

Excellent

March

Very good, autumn begins

Very good

Good, cooler

Very good, stable

April

Autumn colour, cold, fewer services

Good, quiet

Lower trails, short days

Very good, autumn colour

May – September

Winter, guided only

Glacier walkways open all year

Snow activities

Skiing (June – September)

Wind, weather and what to pack

The one thing every first-time visitor underestimates is the wind. Patagonian summer wind is not a breeze; on an exposed ridge it can stop you walking. It is strongest from November to February and calmer in autumn, which is one reason experienced hikers like March and April so much.

The rule is layers: a base layer, a fleece, a windproof and waterproof shell, a hat and gloves even in January, and sunglasses and sunscreen, because the southern sun is strong. Trail shoes or boots that are already broken in matter more than any other piece of gear. You can see four seasons in one afternoon, and the trip is better when that is a story rather than a problem.

How to combine destinations in one trip

The most common combination is El Calafate with El Chaltén (three hours apart by road) and then a flight to Ushuaia, which gives you the glacier, the Fitz Roy trails and the end of the world in about a week. Our Ushuaia and El Calafate packages are built exactly that way, with the flights, hotels and transfers already arranged.

If you would rather have lakes and forest than glaciers, or you are travelling outside the far-south season, Bariloche with El Calafate pairs the gentlest hiking region with the most spectacular ice. And if your dates fall in winter, tell us: a Patagonia trip in July looks different from one in January, but it is a very good trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best month for hiking in Patagonia?
If you want every trail open and the longest days, January. If you want good conditions with fewer people and less wind, March.

Can I hike in Patagonia in winter?
Yes, but it is a different trip. The Perito Moreno walkways are open all year and the Minitrekking now runs year-round; in Ushuaia and El Chaltén the summer trails are under snow and the activities switch to snowshoes, sleds and boat trips. Bariloche is a ski destination from June to September.

Do I need a guide to hike in El Chaltén?
Not on the main day trails in season; they are well marked and start from the village. In winter, or for anything on the ice, yes.

How far in advance should I book?
For December to February, hotels in El Calafate and El Chaltén and the glacier excursions fill months ahead. For the shoulder months, a few weeks is usually enough, but the flights south are the part to secure early.

Tell us your dates and how much walking you want to do, and we will put together the Patagonia itinerary that fits: contact 01Argentina Travel Agency.
