An Honest Answer from a Local Agency

It is the question we are asked more than any other, usually in the second email: how many days do we really need in Ushuaia? The honest answer is three nights as a minimum and four if your itinerary can carry it — and the reason has less to do with how much there is to see than with how the weather at fifty-five degrees south behaves.

We are an Argentine travel agency and we have been sending travellers to Tierra del Fuego for twenty years. What follows is what we tell people who write to us, including the parts that do not help us sell anything.

The short answer, before the detail

Two nights: possible, and you will spend one of them watching the forecast. It is an easy mistake and we watch it happen constantly: they have different names, different lengths and different photographs, and nobody warns you that the first two hours of all of them are identical. You leave the same pier in the centre of town, you pass the same sea lion colony, you photograph the same lighthouse. The difference only begins after that.

The short cruise is the only one where you actually set foot on an island.

So the first rule of an Ushuaia itinerary is simple: one cruise, chosen properly. Spend the rest of your days on land, because the land here is not a consolation prize.

Which Beagle Channel cruise should you take?

There are three, and this table settles it faster than any brochure:

3 hours

6 hours

9 hours

When it runs

All year, including winter

1 Nov – early April

Mon, Wed & Fri, Nov–Mar

Penguins

No

Yes, from the boat

Yes, from the boat

Do you go ashore?

Yes — 15 to 20 min on Bridges Island

No

Yes — on the mainland, near Puerto Almanza

Food

No

No

Lunch with drinks

Half your day left?

Yes

No

No

Sea lions, cormorants and the Les Éclaireurs lighthouse are on all three.

In plain language: if you want penguins you need the six-hour navigation to the colony, and only between November and early April. The guided landing on Martillo Island is a separate operation with its own strictly limited permits and it is not one of ours. Morning of Day 1: the national park with the train. Afternoon of Day 1: nothing, or the town. Day 2: your cruise, in the morning, so that if it is cancelled you still have the afternoon to be moved onto something else. Do not book the nine-hour trip on a two-day stay — if the weather turns you lose your only remaining slot and there is nowhere to put you.

Five things nobody tells you before you arrive

The afternoon is wasted by almost everyone. The whole industry has trained visitors to book in the morning, so by three in the afternoon the town fills with people who have already done their thing. In high summer the sun is still well up at nine at night, and the light between six and nine — low and sideways across the water — is the light in every photograph of Patagonia you have ever admired. Two of our excursions have afternoon departures precisely for this.

The boats do not include your transfer to the pier. Land excursions generally collect you at your hotel. The cruises leave from the pier or the port car park in the centre of town and getting there is on you. It is a short walk from most central hotels, but nobody expects it.

The national park entrance fee is separate. The train ticket is included in the excursion; the park fee is paid on the day.

The wind is a real thing, not a figure of speech. Bring a windproof outer layer whatever the forecast says, in any month. The temperature in town is not the temperature on the water or at the top of Route 3.

Flights to Ushuaia fill early in high season. December to February and the July school holidays sell out, and a late booking usually means an awkward connection through Buenos Aires that costs you half a day at each end.

So: three nights, four if you can

Three nights buys you the park with the train, one cruise, and a spare day for the weather to misbehave — which, at this latitude, it will, at least once. Four nights buys you the same plus the far shore of the channel in summer, or a full day in the snow in winter, without ever looking at your watch.

And whatever you do, only book one cruise.

When you want it booked

Tell us your dates and we will build the days around them.

Ushuaia runs on tight connections, and the value of using an agency here is not the booking — it is having someone who can move the pieces when a boat is cancelled for wind at eight in the morning. 01Argentina is a licensed Argentine travel agency (File No. 17869 with the national tourism authority, ASTA member), and we have been putting these trips together for twenty years.

Prefer to browse first? All our optional excursions in Ushuaia, compared side by side, or our Ushuaia tour packages with flights and hotels included.

Get a free quotation in 24 hours

Three nights is the honest minimum and four is comfortable.
